Resolutions imply outcome and sometimes we don’t have control of our outcomes. However, with intentions, you have access to what you seek for yourself and what brings more meaning to what, why, and how you what you need.
So, this year in 2025…. You can set your own intentions without the focus or pressure on an “expected “outcome
In ShaMynds Healing Center, Inspire Reads, we recommend:
Mind Magic, Dr James Doty
Dr Doty writes about the science of intention in the brain and how drawing attention to intentional living leads to the reality of what you can manifest.

Happy New Year!
Doty’s describes the explicit and implicit profound power of intentionality. Whether it’s through practicing gratitude, fostering kindness, or visualizing a better future, In Mind Magic he explains the neurocognitive process of intention and manifestation with practical tools to how thought becomes action. Mind Magic emphasizes that small, intentional actions as a daily mindful ritual and practice can lead to profound in own’s path to change and success.
Manifestation: The Science, Not Magic, It Is a Neurological Process
What is the neuroscience of intention setting and how does this lead to positive change and motivation to act?
“The reality is that the same mind that creates the obstacles to the life you want is also the source of the intention that will make the life that you want real. This is the real secret.”
Dr Doty says, manifestation isn’t magic—it’s a neurological process rooted in the brain’s adaptability or neuroplasticity. The brain’s ability to form new neural pathways and circuits, while also pruning away older circuitry that no longer serve us. With an intentional focus, one draws awareness to what truly matters, reshaping our minds to help us manifest our goals.
Key Brain Networks and the Vagus Nerve for Manifestation
Four brain networks work together to embed intentions into our subconscious:
- Default Mode Network (DMN)
- Central Executive Network (CEN)
- Salience Network (SN)
- Attention Network (AN)

In Mind Magic, the vagus nerve also plays a crucial role in intention and focus by serving as a bridge between the brain and body, influencing emotional regulation, focus, and the ability to connect with our goals.
The vagus nerve, “the chakra” nerve, is a communication system that connects the brain to all organ systems in the body and facilitates both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity (fight, flight or rest digest).

The interaction of these key networks in the brain and implementation of polyvagal theory “enables us to give salience to our goals, making them important enough for our brain to pursue them constantly.” James Doty MD
Steps to Manifest Your Intentions
1. Reclaim Focus
Your ability to control where you place your attention is your superpower. By practicing metacognition, sitting with discomfort, and shifting from stress to calm, you regain self-agency over your mind.
Self-agency is your superpower. “The sense of self-agency is the feeling of being in control of our actions and their outcomes. It’s a fundamental aspect of being human, but many of us have forgotten we possess it. By reclaiming our power to direct our attention, we regain control over our lives and unlock our potential to manifest our desires.”
Strategies to reclaim attention:
Practice metacognition (observing your own thoughts)
Recognize the negativity bias and its evolutionary roots
Learn to sit with discomfort instead of avoiding it
Use relaxation techniques to shift from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest mode
Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
2. Clarify Desires
Tune into your authentic aspirations by reflecting on fulfilling moments, visualizing success, and aligning goals with a larger purpose.
Steps to clarify your desires:
Reflect on moments of deep fulfillment and alignment
Visualize your definition of success in vivid detail
Explore the emotions associated with your vision
Consider how your goal serves something larger than yourself
3. Overcome Mental Blocks
Use self-compassion to silence your inner critic and replace limiting beliefs with empowering thoughts.
Befriend your inner critic. “Our minds are often filled with limiting beliefs and negative self-talk that hinder our ability to manifest our desires. These obstacles are often rooted in childhood experiences and evolutionary adaptations designed to keep us safe. By practicing self-compassion, we can soothe these fears and create a supportive inner environment for growth and transformation.”
4. Visualize Daily
Train your brain to recognize your goals through vivid, sensory-rich visualization paired with positive emotions.
“The brain does not distinguish between an actual physical experience and one that is intensely imagined.”
Visualization techniques:
Engage all five senses in your mental imagery
Experience the positive emotions of achieving your goal
Practice visualization daily for at least 20 minutes
Create a written or recorded description of your intention
5. Practice Self-compassion
Practice Self-compassion has the power to heal the parts of us that feel chronically unsafe and unloved—the basis for our shadow and our resistance to thriving—and transform them into vital sources of wisdom and compassion to share with others.
Self-compassion practices:
Identify and challenge limiting beliefs
Write down negative thoughts and their opposites
Visualize feeling safe, protected, and unconditionally loved
Offer yourself the same kindness you would give to a dear friend
As we cultivate self-compassion, we create a secure base from which we can explore our full potential and manifest our deepest intentions
6. Pursue with Passion
Align your goals with a higher purpose and create a network of support for yourself and with others to stay motivated and connected.
Strategies for passionate pursuit:
Reflect on how your goal benefits others or contributes to the greater good
Practice generosity and kindness to activate prosocial physiology
Cultivate a supportive network of like-minded individuals
Stay open to synchronicities and unexpected connections
Persist through setbacks by focusing on the larger purpose
The magic of the process is that it’s the same hardware. When you set your mind to a good result, the pathway is exactly the same, but the software is updated through positive neurofeedback.
7. Let Go of Expectations
Embrace gratitude and openness to unexpected opportunities. Letting go of rigid outcomes allows synchronicity to lead the way.
Importance of embracing equanimity and gratitude. Doty describes this final step in manifesting is paradoxical: after passionately pursuing our goal, we must learn to let go of our attachment to a specific outcome. This release allows us to remain open to unexpected opportunities and synchronicities that may lead us to even better results than we initially imagined
“Manifesting is subject to the same rules of life, physics, and reality as everything else. We cannot force a result if it is not in the nature of reality to bring it about.”
Practices for releasing attachment:
Cultivate equanimity through meditation or mindfulness
Practice gratitude for what you already have
Recognize the transient nature of both success and failure
Focus on the journey and personal growth rather than just the end result
Stay open to alternative paths and unexpected opportunities
By releasing our grip on expectations, we create space for magic to unfold in our lives. Remember that the universe may have plans even better than what we can imagine, and true fulfillment comes from aligning with the flow of life rather than forcing our will upon it.
