The Science of Music, Entrainment, and Ketamine Treatments - Sacramento, CA

A Journey into Healing

by Dr Alya Ahmad, MD

Introduction

At ShaMynds Healing Center, www.shamynds.com, we explore the profound intersection of music, entrainment, and ketamine-assisted therapy—a fusion that promises new horizons in the treatment of resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Music and medicine are intricately involved in guiding individuals through the complex landscape of emotions and healing. Ketamine, which, by itself, has regenerative and restorative benefits in treating the chronic effects on the nervous system and brain. Ketamine combined with music has the power of enhancing the harmonizing benefits of neuronal signaling often disrupted by inflammation induced by chronic and toxic stress.

This blog delves into the scientific underpinnings and therapeutic potentials of this integrative approach, shedding light on how music and ketamine work together to foster even deeper restorative healing for treatment-resistant conditions, PTSD, depression, anxiety, OCD, and more.

The Healing Power of Music

Sound waves of variable frequencies, tones, and pitch travel through the ear canal and vibrate onto the tympanic membrane (ear drum). The tympanic membrane converts these sound waves to mechanical waves as they enter the basilar membrane of the cochlea in the inner ear. Microscopic hair cells along the basilar membrane are turned on and off by different frequencies, which then release neurotransmitters and cause action potentials with electrical signaling in the auditory nerve. Through the auditory nerve via layers of synaptic connections, complex signals are then transmitted to the auditory brainstem. These signals are then delivered in the auditory cortex and other cortical structures in the brain, where sound is processed and interpreted.

Music which includes tone, pitch, rhythm, melody, and beat, affects every single part of the brain: from the frontal cortex, the most recently evolved part of the brain, temporal, limbic (emotional brain), to the hippocampus (a seahorse-shaped region in the center, central to memory formation), to the cerebellum (a wrinkly bulb at the base of the skull, integral to balance and movement), to the brainstem, the most ancient part of the brain. No other activity affects more parts of the brain than music – not athletics, not mathematics, not language.

Creating music can also connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain by thickening a strip of tissue that runs down the center of the brain called the “corpus callosum” – a bridge between both sides of ourselves

How the Ear Works

Music, often described as a universal language, has a unique ability to touch every part of the brain. From the frontal cortex, responsible for cognitive functions, to the hippocampus, crucial for memory formation, and the cerebellum, which governs balance and movement, music’s impact is profound and far-reaching. Unlike other activities, music engages the brain’s entire spectrum, making it a powerful tool in therapeutic settings.

Music and Psychedelic Therapy

In a 2018 paper published in Psychopharmacology, Mendel Kalen et al at Imperial College London refer to music as ‘the hidden therapist’ based on its central role in psychedelic therapy. Dr. Sam Gandy has said that “music can create a new form of structure and narrative in the midst of the psychedelic state, helping guide people through their inner ocean of mind.”

Music can also help patients through uncertain, turbulent, or challenging experiences.

Music with ketamine and other psychedelic substances can support the occurrence of mystical and insightful experiences, which have been found to strongly predict beneficial outcomes in reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma and increases in openness.

Music’s role in creating a structured and narrative journey through the psychedelic experience is invaluable. It guides individuals through their inner landscapes, helping them navigate turbulent emotions and fostering mystical and insightful experiences that help address the root causes of their symptoms.

The Role of Music in Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

Music is a vital tool. Music not only guides the journey, but the music facilitates the synchronization in the body affected by trauma, depression, anxiety and the like with entrainment.  Sounds harmonize to electro-physiological signal in the body via neuronal, autonomic, movement, and or socialization pathways. In a dysregulated nervous system, entrainment practices can attune the nervous system and body’s emotional and physical pain towards more deeply connected patterns of healed states.

By utilizing ketamine as a neuromuscular and psychedelic substance, music can integrate the experience in session as a harmonizing agent. Integrating music into KAT leverages the science of entrainment to enhance the therapeutic experience. Music can act as a powerful catalyst for emotional exploration and healing during ketamine sessions.

In ketamine-assisted therapy, music acts as a conduit for emotional and psychological exploration. Carefully curated playlists can evoke memories, emotions, and narratives that patients can process during their sessions. The therapeutic use of music in this context is designed to anchor and propel the patient’s journey, providing a sense of direction and facilitating emotional release and processing.

The Science Behind the Sound

Cymatics

The concept of cymatics—making sound visible—reveals how vibrations interact to create the world we experience. Understanding these principles can clarify our perception of life, offering insights into how music and sound influence our bodies, internal systems. In addition, cymatics have been shown to produce cellular patterns not only in the body but also in nature as well.

Roles of Cymatics & Sound Therapy in Spirituality & Consciousness

Cymatics is the science of sound made visible. Submerged air bubbles in water, excited by low-frequency sound, exhibit life-like behavior in that they appear to chase each other around the CymaScope’s cuvette while a cymatic pattern forms on their spheroidal surfaces – shed light on the origin of life around hydrothermal vents in the primordial oceans. “This may help to clarify the way sound intelligence emerges in nature.”

Dr. Rupert Sheldrake and Dr. Merlin Sheldrake carried out a rigorous investigation into Faraday Waves— the scientific term for Cymatic—using the CymaScope instrument. Published in the Water Journal, October 2017 edition, their paper is titled, Determinants of Faraday Wave-Patterns in Water Samples Oscillated Vertically at a Range of Frequencies from 50-200 Hz.

Fabien Maman, an expert in vibration sound healing in France, demonstrated the impact of acoustics on cancerous cells. Sound and energy fields, as seen with a Kirlian camera, exhibited the destruction of cancer cells while simultaneously energizing the healthy cells. The energetic aura, color, and shape of the cells modulated to musical pitch and timbre.

Understanding Entrainment

Entrainment is another fascinating phenomenon where two or more independent rhythmic processes synchronize with each other. In the context of music therapy, entrainment refers to the synchronization of physiological functions, such as heart rate and brain waves, to the rhythm of music. The rhythmic processing and neuronal stimuli evoked by a music then influences the internal bodily rhythms and emotional systems of the listener.  This concept has been instrumental in understanding how music can profoundly impact our physical and mental states.

Entrainment and Neuroplasticity

This phenomenon can lead to profound therapeutic effects. When combined with psychedelic substances like ketamine, music enhances neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. This is particularly beneficial in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, where traditional treatments may fall short.

Types of Entrainment

Several types of entrainment:

Neuronal entrainment: this type of entrainment occurs when sound wave travels via the eighth cranial nerve and matches to the natural oscillations of electrical activity in the brain. Other external stimuli, like flickering lights, speech, and tactile touch, can also impact the synchronization of the brain wave as well.

Rhythmic: is the coordination of body movement that occurs to a perception of beat. In this type of entrainment, psychological and emotion is evoked because the music impacts the body with motion.

Perceptual Entrainment with Music and Ketamine: Perceptual entrainment refers to the synchronization of sensory perception with rhythmic stimuli. In the context of music, this involves the alignment of neural activity with the rhythm and tempo of the music. When music is combined with the effects of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, the perceptual experience can be significantly altered. Ketamine can change the perception of time and sensory input, potentially enhancing the entrainment experience. This altered state may make individuals more sensitive to musical rhythms, leading to a more profound synchronization with the beats and overall structure of the music, potentially inducing trance-like states or enhancing the emotional and immersive experience of the music.

Social Entrainment with Music and Ketamine: Social entrainment involves the synchronization of behaviors, emotions, or physiological states between individuals through social interactions. Music can serve as a powerful tool for social entrainment by bringing people together and synchronizing their movements, emotions, and expressions, such as dancing or clapping to a beat. When combined with ketamine, social entrainment can be further influenced as ketamine can alter social perceptions and emotional responses. The drug may enhance feelings of connectedness and reduce social inhibitions, leading to a stronger sense of unity and shared experience during musical events. This can be particularly evident in group settings, such as concerts or dance parties, where the combined effects of music and ketamine may lead to a heightened sense of group cohesion and collective emotional experience.

How Entrainment Works in Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

  1. Rhythmic Synchronization: As patients listen to music during their ketamine sessions, their physiological responses begin to synchronize with the music’s rhythm. This synchronization can lead to a state of relaxation and heightened emotional receptivity, making it easier to process and integrate therapeutic experiences.
  2. Emotional Resonance: Music has the unique ability to evoke and amplify emotions. In a KAT setting, carefully selected music can help patients access and explore deep-seated emotions, facilitating breakthroughs and insights that might be difficult to achieve through talk therapy alone.
  3. Enhanced Focus and Presence: The entraining effects of music can help patients maintain focus and stay present during their ketamine journey. This heightened state of awareness can lead to more meaningful and transformative therapeutic experiences.

Music can be used to synchronize movements and evoke emotions in affected individuals. Entrainment can serve as a therapeutic tool to bring natural rhythmicity to affected individuals promoting the reorganization of abnormal circuits as evidenced with children with autism spectrum conditions. (Chen et al., 2008Kornysheva et al., 2010).

Choosing the Right Music

Selecting the appropriate music for KAT is crucial. The music should align with the therapeutic goals and resonate with the patient’s personal preferences and cultural background. Here are some tips for choosing the right music:

  1. Consider Emotional Impact: Choose music that evokes the desired emotional states, whether it’s relaxation, introspection, or catharsis.
  2. Match the Rhythm: The tempo and rhythm of the music should support the intended phase of the ketamine session, whether it’s the initial induction, peak experience, or integration phase.
  3. Cultural Relevance: Incorporating music that holds cultural significance for the patient can enhance the sense of connection and inclusivity.

At Shamynds Healing Center, our approach to ketamine-assisted therapy includes integrating music into every session. Patients are encouraged to engage in meditative listening, reflecting on how music influences their emotional and physical states. This practice not only enhances the therapeutic experience but also helps patients develop a deeper connection with their inner selves.
